Robotic Welding for Medical Beds in Malaysia

Client Profile

Our client is a furniture manufacturer based in Malaysia, focusing on medical beds for hospitals and healthcare facilities. As demand grew, the company realized that its manual welding process could no longer keep up with the required consistency and production speed. Even small inconsistencies could compromise the safety and durability of the beds.

The Challenge:

Before automation, welding of medical bed frames was done entirely by hand, relying on skilled welders and significant labor hours. Despite this effort, weld quality varied between batches, making consistency hard to maintain. The client needed a solution that could:

  • Improve welding accuracy and stability across different frame designs
  • Increase throughput while retaining flexibility for small-batch production
  • Ensure consistent welding quality without relying heavily on operator skill

Our Solution: The Trifecta of Robotic Precision

In 2021, our engineering team developed a customized robotic welding workstation tailored to the client’s production needs. The system was built around an OTC six-axis robotic arm integrated into a dual-station configuration, allowing one side to be loaded and unloaded while the robot welded on the other. This setup helped reduce idle time and improved overall throughput.

To handle the varying frame structures, we designed manual fixtures that could be quickly adjusted for different models, striking a balance between automation and flexibility. A three-axis positioner was also added to the system, enabling smooth and synchronized rotation and tilt for complex weld positions. With fine-tuned arc welding parameters and a user-friendly control interface, the system provided stable performance even for operators with limited automation experience.

Our team took full responsibility for design, robot programming, and on-site commissioning. The installation process was completed efficiently, ensuring a smooth transition from manual to robotic welding with minimal disruption to production.

The Outcomes:

After installation, the robotic welding system delivered:

  • Consistent weld quality that met the client’s strict strength and appearance standards for medical equipment
  • Productivity gains of approximately 30-40% compared with manual welding
  • Reduced operator fatigue and improved workplace safety, as manual handling of large bed frames was minimized
  • A stable and repeatable process that maintained weld quality even with new operators

Following the project’s success, the client has since expanded the use of robotic welding to other production lines, marking a key step toward smarter manufacturing in Malaysia’s furniture and healthcare equipment sector.
